Nobody plans to hire a pest control company. They find mice in the kitchen, a wasp nest by the back door or bed bugs after a trip, and they want someone out as soon as possible. Most of them pick up their phone and search Google. That makes pest control one of the clearest cases for Google Ads and Google Maps: the demand is urgent, local, and already looking for you.
The companies that win these calls are the ones that show up first, look credible and answer fast. Here is how to set that up.
Social ads put an offer in front of people who were not thinking about pests. That can work for recurring protection plans, but for one-off calls you are paying to create interest. Search is different. Someone typing "mouse exterminator near me" has the problem right now and is choosing who to call. You are paying to be in front of a decision that is already happening.
That is why the cost per lead can be low when the campaign is built right. Sam Thornal at PestMeOff.com got 34 leads in 5 days at $6.36 per lead with Google Ads. In his words, there is "no team that can deliver better and cheaper results than the Variance Marketing team."
A single campaign called "Pest Control" with broad keywords will spend money on research searches and people looking for DIY sprays. Split campaigns by pest and by job, so each ad matches what the person typed.
Use phrase and exact match for the core terms, and build a negative keyword list from day one: "DIY", "spray", "how to", "home remedy", "jobs", "salary", "license", and any pest you do not treat. Review the search terms report every week and keep adding to that list. This is where most wasted spend hides.
The person searching is stressed and wants the problem gone. Your ads should say what you treat, where, and how quickly you can come out.
Your schedule matters too. If nobody answers the phone at 9 pm, either lower bids after hours and push people to a form, or set up an AI voice agent that can take the call and book the visit.
Sending every ad to your homepage wastes the intent you just paid for. Build a landing page for each main pest, or at least for each group.
Keep the page fast on a phone. Many of these searches happen on a phone, often while the person is looking right at the problem.
Google Ads and Google Maps work together. Many pest searches show a Maps pack near the top of the page, and people trust a listing with plenty of recent reviews. Ranking there brings calls you do not pay for per click, which pulls your overall cost per lead down.
Local visibility moves calls for every kind of service business. Hussein Q. at Columbus Perfect Tint, another local service business, got to the top spots on Google Maps in 30 days, and it brought in 30 additional calls. Different trade, same mechanism: be the business in the map when people nearby search.
John at PoopScoop.ca, also a local service business, had 80% of his keywords ranked #1 within 90 days. He told us he was "just inundated with calls now," with two to three calls coming in a day. That is what search visibility looks like for a service company when it works.
A pest lead is only cheap if you close it. The person who filled out your form may have filled out two others. The company that calls back first often gets the job.
Cost per lead is a useful early signal, but the number that matters is cost per booked job, and over time, revenue per lead including recurring plans. Set up conversion tracking for calls and forms, send booked jobs back into Google Ads if your CRM allows it, and compare campaigns pest by pest.
You will often find that one pest brings cheaper leads while another brings bigger tickets or more plan sign-ups. Move budget toward whatever books the most profitable work, and keep testing ads and pages against each other.
